Since moving to the UK several years ago the amount of tea I drink on a daily basis has drastically increased. I can only imagine this tea increase will eventually allow me to genuinely become British, as is only the way one gains citizenship. Professor Hershel Layton, along with other intelligent folk such as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, understand the importance of a good cup of tea. While not a traditional English Breakfast or Darjeeling, Layton’s favourite tea is a cup of Belle Classic, a bitter drink comprised of Oasis Leaf, Brisk Berry and Belle Tart Seed. Tea, like a puzzle, is a delicate process that requires both time and patience.

I’m a huge fan of all things horror, which explains why Halloween is my favourite time of year - endless horror movie marathons and extended surival horror game sessions. Although I can brave the most gruesome of films, I get sucked into games more than I should. After I had to stop playing Dead Space due to palpitations, you’d think I’d know better than to even attempt to play Amnesia; a game which I credit as both the most terrifying and well made horror game in recent years. Fallout: New Vegas – Sunset Sarsaparilla
Since making the ‘Wasteland Omelet’ I picked up Fallout: New Vegas and have been playing it for the past few weeks. While I enjoyed Fallout 3, for me New Vegas is in a league of it’s own. I’ve of course been playing it on Hardcore so I could cook up some survivalist snacks and get the most in-depth experience, and while I’m well over 60 hours into the game, I feel like I’ve hardly made a dent into the main plot. One thing I’ve become obsessed by, as my completionist nature dictates, is finding the Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps, but my motivation isn’t the mysterious prize offered by Festus; it’s personal. Bastion – Leechade
Bastion was the impressive and visually stunning Indie hit of 2011, if you’ve not played it yet I recommend you pick it up right away on Xbox Live, Steam or Google Chrome! One of the most awesome things about the game is the Distillery where The Kid can choose all sorts of interesting potions to help him on his journey. Each one has a unique effect, taste and appearance – I just wish I had the amazing bottles to do each spirit justice. “Leechade’s so sour, it’ll perk you right up when you’re feeling low”.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door – Zess Frappe
There’s no denying how suspiciously like the Snow Cone from Paper Mario the Zess Frappe looks… But I got some stunning ice-cream bowls for Christmas by my favourite home-ware designers Alessi and I wanted an excuse to use them! With Christmas comes a lot of heavy, rich food and drink and Sambuca is often praised for its digestion benefits (at least in this household). I thought as a twist on the cocktail idea to serve one up as a frappe/granita inspired concoction for a light and refreshing distraction.

The red health potion, stored in a mystical apothecary vessel, is incredibly iconic in gaming and is found in many a dungeon crawler. Since I’m so excited for Diablo III I thought I’d focus on the most famous and original version as found in the series (though I’m aware that health potions are not being used in Diablo III – boo!). So in the spirit of Christmas and New Year being a time for relaxation and recuperation I thought this surprisingly sweet and refreshing health potion is just what most of us are looking for.

What you will need: A tea infuser.
Ingredients:
Loose Tea:
Darjeeling Earl Grey
Lemongrass
Super Fruit Berry
A Slice of Lemon
Freshly Boiled Water
Brewing the Belle Classic:
Fill your infuser with 1 part Darjeeling Earl Grey, 1 part Super Fruit Berry and 1 part Lemongrass. Place the infuser in a cup of fresh boiled water, cover, and allow to brew for 3 minutes.
Place a slice of lemon into the tea, and allow to cool slightly before drinking.
A delightful shade of red, the Belle Classic is smooth and slightly bitter with a sweet undertone. It’s very refreshing and calming, perfect for winding down and feeling reinvigorated. It’s no mystery as to why the Belle Classic is Layton’s favourite.

This recipe serves 2.
What you will need: A small pot, a blender and a cocktail shaker.
Ingredients:
6 Cubes Rose Turkish Delight
280ml / 1¼ Cup Milk
Ruby Red Food Colouring (Optional)
35ml / 1.2 fl oz. Vanilla Vodka
Ice
Making the Amnesia Drink:
Finely chop the Turkish Delight into small pieces, then place it in the pot along with the milk. Bring the milk to a gentle simmer on a low heat until the Turkish Delight begins to melt.
After about 5 minutes, pour the mixture into a clean vessel and blend until smooth. Allow the rose flavour milk to come to room temperature before chilling in the fridge. If the drink isn’t quite pink enough, add some ruby red food colouring to reach the desired shade.
Once the milk has chilled, pour it into a cocktail shaker over some ice. Add the vodka then shake it up. Strain the drink into a glass, adorn with rose petals and serve.

This recipe serves 2.
What you will need: A bottle with a cap/lid, a funnel and a sieve.
Ingredients:
250ml / 8.5 fl oz. Cola (Not Diet)
100ml / 3.5 fl oz. Dandelion and Burdock
150ml / 5 fl oz. Ginger Beer (Non-alcoholic)
1 Teaspoon Angostura Bitters (Optional)
1 Tablespoon Fresh Orange Juice
1 Teaspoon Fresh Lemon Juice
1 Teaspoon Whole Cloves
1 Star Anise
Fresh Mint
Ice
Making the Sunset Sarsaparilla:
In a large bottle with the aid of a funnel, pour in the cola, dandelion and burdock and ginger beer. Add the Angostura Bitters, squeeze of fresh orange and lemon juice as well as the cloves, star anise and mint.
Mix it all together, close the bottle and return it to the fridge to chill and infuse for about an hour. Allow the mixture to lose some carbonation, this will add to the flavour and authenticity!
Strain the mixture through a sieve into a clean vessel of your choice, then serve over ice and garnish with fresh mint and a twist of lemon.

This recipe serves 1.
What you will need: A Moka Express/Espresso Maker/Cafetiere etc., a small mug and a small pan.
Ingredients:
75ml / 2.5 fl oz. Fresh Espresso/Strong Coffee
25ml / 0.85 fl oz. Vanilla Coffee Syrup
50ml / 1.7 fl oz. Almond Milk
100ml / 3.5 fl oz. Whole Milk
Optional Garnish:
Double/Heavy Cream
Feathers
Making Brewster’s Pigeon Blend:
In a small pan, warm the whole milk and almond milk together - don’t let it boil! Have your cup ready with the vanilla syrup filling the bottom.
Prepare your coffee. Once the almond milk and milk is near boiling point, pour it into the mug on top of the vanilla syrup.
Next add the shot of espresso on top, then swirl through with a little cream. Garnish with a few Brewster feathers.
Turning on my DS was a stressful affair, I tried to avoid looking at all those weeds… It’s just as well I had this cup of java to pick me up. Though Brewster would rather you took your coffee black, his legendary Pigeon Blend is a beautiful homage in gaming, but could you expect anything less?! For the record, I did research the idea of actually using ‘pigeon milk’ and soon discovered ‘crop milk’. Something you definitely don’t want in your morning coffee.

What you will need: A tall glass.
Ingredients:
8 Raspberries
Crushed Ice
10ml / 0.33oz. Chambord Raspberry Liqueur (Or Raspberry Juice)
50ml / 1.5oz. Raspberry Lemonade
100ml / 3.3oz Champagne (Or Tonic Water)
Top Up with Lychee Juice
Mint Sprigs
Fresh Lemon Juice
Making Love Potion #8.5:
Crush the raspberries and press them into the bottom of the glass then pour the crushed ice on top.
Pour in the Chambord, followed by the raspberry lemonade, champagne then top it off with lychee juice. If you do it right you can create an impressive ‘layered’ look to the drink.
Garnish with a sprig of mint and a twist of lemon juice.
I’m not sure I could have picked a cornier thing to make! While I think Valentine’s Day can be a bit shallow I do enjoy the excuse to be overly romantic and indulge a little more than usual in treating my significant other. In saying this, every relationship faces hard times. Ours was definitely when we played Borderlands together and he earned the name “Loot Hoover”. It nearly ended in divorce.

This recipe makes 1 drink.
Ingredients:
Ice-cubes
50g / ½ Cup Sugar
60ml / ¼ Cup Water
60ml / ¼ Cup Raspberry Sambuca
Raspberry Conserve / Jelly
Making the Zess Frappe:
Add the water and sugar to a pan and bring to the boil. Stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from the heat, cover and allow to sit for 10 minutes.
Uncover then add the raspberry sambuca and stir, place in a pouring container and allow to cool to room temperature before placing in the fridge to chill.
When the syrup has chilled, using a blender with the appropriate setting, or a food processor, to grind up the ice until powdery. Scoop the ice into glasses, pour over the raspberry sambuca syrup, top with a little raspberry conserve and enjoy.
